Lapland has more of everything, even seasons

Here in Finland, we have the pleasure of enjoying distinct seasons, and in the north, the variation is even greater. Lapland's seasons offer different opportunities and experiences, and there are as many as eight of them. Which of these seasons in Lapland might be your favorite for a holiday?

Into the silent polar night of the freezing winter that begins the year, the majestic northern lights bring light. The days are short and the frosts are crisp, and nature is a magnificently white snow paradise. Darkness and frost begin to recede in March as the days fill with light, and the crust-snow spring begins. The season is perfect for winter sports and outdoor activities on the glistening snowdrifts and river ice. Spring can already be sensed.

Nature awakens to new growth with the light, and it is time to take boats out onto the water as the spring ice break-up arrives in April. Rivers free themselves from their ice cover, and the timing of the ice break-up is guessed annually in the form of a betting competition.

The midnight sun period lasts from May all the way to July. Summer is short, but all the more intense because the sun does not set at all during that period. It is time to soak up the light and enjoy summer events around the clock.

As evenings begin to darken and berries ripen, the lush late summer harvest season begins. Now the gifts of nature are gathered for the winter. The hunting season begins around the same time as nature bursts into its final flash of color before winter with the foliage of autumn. Fall foliage lures people out into nature to move and admire this unique display of colors.

During the time of the first snow, the days are shorter again, the ground begins to freeze, and the trees shed their leaves. The dark landscape is illuminated by the first delicate layer of snow, and it is time to prepare for the arrival of winter and proper freezing temperatures. With the polar night of the Christmas season, nature quiets down to slumber. The Christmas polar night, which concludes the year, also gives us time to rest and relax before Lapland's seasons can begin anew with the next cycle of the year.
